Museum of Art features renowned televisionary' artist
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, one of southern California's finest art museums, features nationally recognized collections and special exhibitions of international importance. Highlights of the museum's remarkable permanent collection include antiquities; 19th-century French, British, and American art with works by Monet, Matisse, Bierstadt, Duncan Grant and Hopper; 20th-century modern and contemporary European, North American and Latin American art including works by Kandinsky, David Hockney, Milton Avery, Rufino Tamayo and Gunther Gerzso; Asian art; photography and works on paper by such artists as Degas, Picasso and Miro.
If Hollywood's Golden Age is more your style, you'll enjoy Camera Over Hollywood: Photographs by John Swope (June 10-Aug. 13). Hollywood insider Swope captured intimate images of such stars as Jimmy Stewart and Olivia de Havilland as he documented Hollywood's heyday.
Mastering the Medium: Woodcuts (May 27-Aug. 13) draws from the Museum's own prodigious collection to trace the history of this fascinating art form, while Fernand Lungren: Sketches of the West (May 20-Aug. 13) offers an intimate selection of works by a distinguished Santa Barbara plein air painter.
Museum visitors will also enjoy the interactive children's gallery, the cafe and the Museum Store. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is located at 1130 State St., Santa Barbara. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday 12 -5 p.m., and Friday 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Admission is $5 general, $3 seniors and $2 students. Docent-led tours of the special exhibitions are held daily at noon, docent tours of the permanent collection are offered daily at 2 p.m.
