State Street
The downtown shopping district stretches all the way from Sola Street to the waterfront. Along the way, discover hidden courtyards with their Spanish and Mediterranean-style architecture, fountains and blooming flowers. You'll be tempted to linger in the trendy clothing boutiques, bistros and cafes, galleries and gift shops, but electric trams stop at every block to whisk you along your way.

Victoria Court
On the west side of the 1200 block of State between Victoria and Anapamu streets, Victoria Court offers wine tasting, furniture, gift shops, clothing boutiques and restaurants. Wander through on your trek down State Street.

La Arcada Court
A 16-foot-tall Westminster clock marks the entrance to this arcade on the east side of State Street's 1100 block. The T-shaped Spanish paseo is filled with exotic blooms, tiled fountains and playful bronze sculptures. You'll find several restaurants, specialty shops, art galleries and an old-fashioned barber shop.

Historic El Paseo
This charming Spanish courtyard shopping complex was built around the original De la Guerra family homestead. It is now home to a number of specialty shops, art galleries, antique stores and restaurants. Romantic gardens, fountains and Spanish Colonial architecture lie tucked between State, De la Guerra, Anacapa and Canon Perdido streets.

Paseo Nuevo
At the hub of State Street's activity, between Canon Perdido and Ortega streets, sits beautiful Paseo Nuevo. This cluster of sparkling white stucco buildings creates a unique Mediterranean-style village filled with numerous treasures. Anchored by Nordstrom and Macy's, Paseo Nuevo houses Paseo Nuevo Cinemas, Center Stage Theater, and the Contemporary Arts Forum more than 50 stores and restaurants.

Stearns Wharf and The Harbor
Stroll along historic Stearns Wharf (newly restored since the 1998 fire), where you'll discover gift shops, local arts and crafts, restaurants and outdoor cafes, wine tasting and even a palm reader. Walk along West Beach, past several top-rated restaurants, to the Harbor for unique gifts, sportswear, tackle shops, restaurants and the Fishermen's Market every Saturday morning.

La Cumbre Plaza
Located in the 3800 block of upper State Street between Hope Avenue and La Cumbre Road is La Cumbre Plaza. The largest shopping center in Santa Barbara derives its name from the highest point in the surrounding mountains, La Cumbre Peak. Merchants like Ann Taylor, the Disney Store, Marie Callender's, the Pottery Barn (closed till October for renovation) and Robinson's-May share an inviting outdoor plaza. The entire complex is surrounded by a free parking lot.

Montecito
The Santa Barbara version of Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive, Coast Village Road is an upscale shopping haven. Exclusive boutiques, quaint antique shops, fine art galleries, coffee houses and nurseries can be found amongst the many high-end stores dotting Coast Village Road from Hot Springs to Olive Mill roads, as well as in the upper Montecito Village shopping area lining East Valley Road.

Goleta
Shopping complexes, each with its own personality, line both sides of Highway 101 in Goleta, including Fairview and Calle Real shopping centers on the north side, and Magnolia, K-mart and University centers, located on the south side of the highway along Hollister Avenue. The Camino Real Marketplace, a recent addition to the area, features shops, restaurants and movie theaters along with major retail outlets such as Borders, Sportmart and Costco at Storke Road and Hollister Avenue.

Carpinteria/Summerland
Meandering through beach towns is always a special delight. Perched on the steep hills overlooking the Pacific in Summerland is a large group of antique shops and specialty stores. Cafes, unique gift shops and beachwear can be discovered along Summerland's Lillie Avenue. Carpinteria is home to many unusual shops lining Linden and Carpinteria avenues, as well as the Casitas Pass and Shepard Place shopping centers.

Solvang/Los Olivos/Santa Ynez
The 45-minute scenic drive north up Highway 154 is well worth the trip. These quaint, picturesque towns are among the most unique in California. The Danish village of Solvang is sprinkled with windmills, parks, gift shops, Scandinavian restaurants, bakeries and factory outlets. Los Olivos, once a main coach stop for the Butterfield Stage Company, is home to the largest collection of contemporary Western artists between Carmel and Los Angeles. The little frontier town of Santa Ynez claims antique stores, galleries and tack and feed stores.

Arts & Crafts Show
Every fair-weather Sunday and holiday, 10 a.m. to dusk, more than 150 local artists line Cabrillo Blvd. at the beach to exhibit and sell their wares: original drawings, paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, photography and unique crafts.

Farmers Market
Santa Barbara and its surrounding communities host six farmers markets each week. Visit one of these open-air bazaars for farm-fresh produce, fragrant flowers and delectable herbs (and interesting people-watching opportunities).
