When Richard B. Welch was asked four years ago to head the campaign to raise $4 million to renovate the Santa Barbara YMCA, he was delighted to accept the challenge.

News-Press Holiday Fund

The News-Press Holiday Fund was established in 1949 by former News-Press owner Thomas Storke, who was shocked at the cost of a wheelchair after he broke his leg. Since then, the Holiday Fund has brought in more than $2 million from individuals, local groups, companies and foundations.

On Nov. 13, the News-Press Lifetime Achievement Award dinner kicked off the drive, which runs through New Year's. At the banquet, the paper honored four community leaders and announced this year's fund recipients: People's Self-Help Housing Corporation and the K-9 Placement and Assistance League.

Contributions may be mailed to: News-Press Holiday Fund, P.O. Box 1359, Santa Barbara, CA 93102.
