BARNES, Eleanor (Bune) Campbell
passed on to be with her Lord November 22, 2005. She was born November 28, 1916 at Cottage Hospital and was a fourth generation Goletan. Eleanor was the daughter of Dr. Edgar O. Campbell, an early physician in Goleta, and Frances Louisa Kellogg whose family were early settlers in the valley.
Eleanor was a member of Goleta Federated/Community Covenant Church since 1923 and was an active participant in their womens' organizations. She was a devoted wife and mother, avid Goleta historian, Braille Institute volunteer and an inspiration and role model to everyone who knew her.
A highlight in her life was visiting St. Lawrence Island and Sitka, Alaska where her parents served as missionaries and fostered numerous children. She was a loyal supporter of Sheldon Jackson College and KCIS Christian Radio Station in Alaska.
Husband of 35 years, Delbert L. Barnes of Santa Ynez and sister Gail Hartley of Anchorage, Alaska preceded Eleanor in death. She is survived by daughters, Karen Leslee Johnson of Goleta, Linda French and son-in-law Richard of Ventura, and Louann Barnes of Figueroa Mountain; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who affectionately called her Tanny.
The family would like to thank her team of caregivers and the Visiting Nurses Hospice Care of Santa Barbara for their compassion and assistance. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Community Covenant Church.
Family and friends will dearly miss her lively spirit. A Celebration Service of her life will be held at Community Covenant Church, 5070 Cathedral Oaks Road, Goleta at 2:00 p.m. on November 30, 2005 and a graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery, Baseline Rd. (W. of Hwy. 154), Ballard, CA at 11:00 a.m. on December 3, 2005.

JACK, Lela R.
Lela (Lee) R. Jack was born in Greenfield, MO on February 15, 1909 and passed away on November 28, 2005 after a long illness. She was the widow of Alec R. Jack, the former Chairman of the Board of E.F. Hutton.
She was an extraordinary person and an active volunteer for many causes. As a member of the National Charity League, Los Angeles Chapter, she served as president of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Advisory Board and President of the Trustees. She was a member of the Music Academy of the West and a member of All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. She was a strong supporter of USC, The House Ear Institute, and Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. She was a talented artist who shared her art with family and friends alike. Most of all, she loved her family and was supportive and generous with all. She had a positive attitude and indomitable spirit.
Sixteen years ago she moved to Santa Barbara to be closer to her family after having lived most of her life in Los Angeles. Lee is survived by her daughter Susan (Mrs. Donald Fuhrer) of Santa Barbara; grandchildren, Alex of Santa Barbara, Jonathan of Goleta and Michelle of Santa Barbara; great grandchildren, Matthew and Annelise.
There will be a private memorial service at a future date for the immediate family. A special thank-you to the staff of Casa Dorinda and especially Rose Mize. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to any of her favorite charities would be appreciated.

PINKERNELL, Mary Ann
July 25, 1925 to Nov. 28, 2005
Long time Carpinteria resident, Mary Ann Pinkernell, passed away on Nov. 28. Her husband, Dr. Bradley Pinkernell, their family and friends will celebrate Mary Ann's life at the Carpinteria Community Church on Friday, Dec. 2nd at 4PM.
Mary Ann was born and raised in Glendale California, graduating from Glendale high school in 1943. She graduated from Immaculate Heart College with a degree in music. Mary Ann's love was opera and she had a beautiful singing voice. Mary Ann was a teacher for many years at Mesa Union Elementary School in rural Ventura County, where she met and married her husband, Dr. B.T. Pinkernell in 1956. They settled in Carpinteria nearly 60 years ago.
In the early 1960's, Mary Ann was president of the Carpinteria Women's Club, and was an active member of the community ever since. Mary Ann was always a prolific volunteer, with projects ranging from hosting many American Field Service students to helping Langdon Nevens introduce children to the wonders of music. Mary Ann's passion was the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History where she was a long time member of their board of directors, and she always helped organize the museum's monthly flea market. As Mary Ann became less mobile in recent years, she was a master of using the phone to line up a small army of volunteers for many, many projects. Mary Ann loved being a member of the Carpinteria Community Church where she has been a part of the bell choir for many years.
Mary Ann is preceded in death by her sister, Betty. Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Dr. Bradley Pinkernell, her brother William Mieding of La Cresenta, California, her son David Pinkernell & daughter-in-law Dr. Carolyn Burhenn of Washougal Washington, her daughter Elaine Pinkernell & son-in-law Chris Luhn & grandsons Miles and Reid Luhn of Corralitos California, and her precious little kitty, Boots.
A celebration of Mary Ann's life will be held at the Carpinteria Community Church on Friday, Dec. 2nd at 4PM at 1111 Vallecito Road. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History.

WARD, Derek Franklyn
Derek left the earth to join his mother, his two brothers, and the Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, November 27, 2005. He left us in the loving arms of his precious wife Cathy.
Derek was a third generation Santa Barbaran born at St. Francis Hospital on July 29, 1959. He attended San Roque Grammar School and graduated from Bishop Diego High School, class of 1978. Derek loved sports, especially football. He was a charter member of Santa Barbara YFL and a four year letterman linebacker at Bishop Diego. He also attended Santa Barbara City College.
Derek entered the workforce working in the family business. Through his hard work and effort he became owner of Central Coast Copier.
On October 24, 1987, Derek married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Goldrick. A marriage made in Heaven as shown by their great love for each other. The joy of their life was a son, William, born July 27, 1994.
Derek's love of athletics continued through his son William as he was his coach in youth soccer and little league baseball. Derek was a strong supporter of St. Louis De Montfort Grammar School through contributions of labor and donations.
Derek is survived by his wife, Catherine; son, William; father, Jack; sisters, Debra Johnson, her husband Jerry, Darlene Hayes, her husband Dwight; and sister-in-law, Sue Ward. He is also survived by nine nephews and two nieces, Jack Hayes, Joe Hayes (wife Dena), Patrick Hayes, Dane Ward, Dayli Ward, Turbo Ward, Dodge Ward, Jessica Johnson, Anthony Johnson, Andrew Johnson and great niece, Jenna Hayes. Derek was preceded in death by his mother, Betty, and brothers, David and Joseph.
Derek was loved by all for warmth, compassion, and love of life. He was a good guy. He left us too soon and took part of our hearts with him. We will miss him dearly, but he is now with his Mom and brothers.
Services as follows: Memorial Mass- Thursday, December 1, 1:30 p.m. at St. Louis De Montfort Church, Cark Ave., Santa Maria, CA; Rosary- Friday, December 2, 7:00 p.m. at Welch-Ryce-Haider Goleta Chapel; Funeral Mass- Saturday, December 3, 10:00 a.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Goleta. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.

WILKES, Leo Leander
September 20, 1924 - November 24, 2005
Leo Leander Wilkes was born on September 20, 1924 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to Jackson and Lillie Wilkes. The youngest of eight children, his surviving siblings are Ruby Boston, Para Lee Conner, and Lillie Wilkes.
After receiving his education in Arkansas and Ohio, he took a position with the government. In 1942 he met and later wed, Thelma Benson. To this union, five children were born, Deidre Gail, Lucy Naomi, Leonard Bruce, Jamaal Keith, and Leo Benson. Two children, Leonard Bruce and Lucy Naomi, preceded him in death. He accepted the ministry in Oakland, California in 1952. Subsequently, he was called to Ventura, California where he pastored at Olivet Baptist Church for ten years. He moved to Second Baptist Church of Santa Barbara, California in 1969 and remained here for 35 years. Due to health reasons, he retired in July of 2004 and became the Pastor Emeritus.
Reverend Wilkes was a lecturer in the Department of Black Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He enjoyed reading and researching Egyptology along with other ancient religions and philosophies. Reverend Wilkes was also an avid traveler, and fan of western television shows and movies. His hobbies included locksmithing, exploring new technologies and tinkering with cars and gizmos. An excellent cook, he enjoyed preparing his specialties, gumbo and barbecue, at family gatherings. Reverend Wilkes was an active leader in the community who touched the lives of many people. Family and friends will remember him for his integrity, wisdom and compassion.
Reverend Wilkes adored his wife of sixty-one years and was a devoted family man. His wife, three children, eight grandchildren, three sisters, two sisters-in-law, two daughters-in-law, three godchildren and a host of other relatives and friends survive him.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 30, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Welch-Ryce-Haider. Services will be held on Thursday, December 1, 11:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 1032 E. Mason St., with a graveside service to follow at Santa Barbara Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Welch-Ryce-Haider.
