Share your love for each other and your love for the earth with a small, outdoor celebration.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. It is the mantra of many environmentally-aware organizations. But can the same logic be applied to wedding planning? The answer is "yes." Having an earth-friendly wedding is actually very simple. For many couples, making choices in the wedding planning process that reflect their environmental values is a way they can not only share love for each other, but also for the earth. Here are some wedding planning tips that will help you choose the eco-friendly path to a beautiful wedding.

Recycled paper invitations: Order invitations on 100 percent recycled PCW paper that has been processed without chlorine. Or try tree-friendly recycled grass paper. Either way, you can feel good about creating less waste in the world. www.twistedlimbpaper.com

Creative locations: Choose a ceremony and reception spot that is outdoors so you can capture the natural beauty of the earth. Or consider one of many local non-profit community sites like Elings Park, the Museum of Natural History or the Zoo. The special event site fees help the organizations better serve the community and keep programs going. Also, keep in mind that having your ceremony and reception in the same location cuts down on excess transportation and reduces air pollution.

Digital photography: Hire a photographer that shoots digitally. Once the wedding is over, order only the photos you want to keep. This will save paper and use fewer toxic chemicals. www.melissamusgrove.com

Natural foods and organic alcohol: Hire a caterer that specializes in serving organic, vegetarian and natural foods. They should also be able to recommend delicious organic wine and beer options. Be sure to have all leftover food donated to a local homeless shelter and avoid using disposable dishes and silverware. www.savoirfairesb.com

Grow your own flowers to personalize your wedding bouquet.

Locally grown flowers: If you have a green thumb, personalize your wedding flowers by growing your own and have your friends help you arrange the bouquet and centerpieces. If you buy flowers or use a florist order locally grown flowers to reduce transportation costs and make sure they are free of pesticides. After the wedding, save the flowers and compost them. You could also use live plants from a local nursery as centerpieces and allow your guests to take them home to plant after the festivities.

Candlelight and soft music: To reduce electricity, use hundreds of candles to light the tables and reception area. Order 100 percent pure beeswax candles and you will have the bonus of a sweet, romantic aroma without any harmful fumes. To further reduce electricity waste, hire acoustic musicians for the ceremony and reception music. www.beeswaxcandleco.com and www.sbeeswaxcandles.com

Green gifts: Register for gifts at socially and environmentally responsible companies like Gaiam or Everything Earth. You can select everything from towels and bedding to yoga mats and wellness books. You could also request that your guests donate to your favorite charity in honor of your wedding. www.gaiam.com and www.everythingearth.com.
