Setting your site on the big day

By Melissa Lee

Planning a wedding (even a small one) can be a huge endeavor, taking hundreds of hours to coordinate a single event. Thankfully, technology has caught up with the wedding industry and it's getting easier to efficiently manage your event with web sites, designed to showcase your wedding. Online services can range from several hundred dollars to nothing at all; they provide a wide range of security features and offer a host of benefits.

The greatest advantage of posting information about your upcoming nuptials is that it gives your family and friends easy access to your wedding information: date, time, place, map, road directions, RSVP and more.

Christine Mallet of Windless Chimes, a wedding web-design company based in Santa Barbara, says that the two most popular pages that she creates are "accommodations" and "activities." Typically, the accommodations page will list several hotels in different price ranges and in close proximity to your event. In some cases, online reservations can be made - you don't even have to pick up a phone!

The activities page is a great resource for those having "destination weddings," where most of the guests will be coming from out of town. This gives people the opportunity to make a complete vacation out of your big day and saves you the hassle of spreading the news individually, the old-fashioned way.

A custom site can not only save you time, but it can also help you handle uncomfortable situations. For example, what do you say to your cousin who insists on bringing her three kids to your adult only reception? You can tactfully communicate "adults only" by announcing on your site that childcare will be provided. Is it appropriate to mail little registry cards with your formal invitation? Solve that dilemma by placing registry links on your site instead.

You can also post fun information about bachelor parties, bridal showers, the rehearsal dinner, reception and post-wedding get-togethers.

Ironically, the impersonal computer has allowed many couples to create a more intimate event by giving guests a window to their lives through pictures and stories posted online. They've included engagement stories telling people how they met, commentaries about attendants and special family members, and photo albums.

Posting your wedding album is a great way to conclude and remember your amazing day. Additionally, it allows those who couldn't be there in person to share in your wedding memories and joy.
